Part of a group of negatives taken for September 28, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Caravan Had Royal Welcome in State," 5F:1. People celebrated the Overland Mail Centennial caravan, which commemorates John Butterfield and his Overland Mail Company from the 1860s. Butterfield traveled from Missouri to San Francisco, California, with his Concord Coach to haul passengers and mail. Pictured is a marker that reads, "The Butterfield Stage Route. The Butterfield Stage Route between Saint Louis and San Francisco passed through the Main Street of Van Buren, Arkansas and crossed the river at this point. Erected by Mary Fuller Percival Chapter D.A.R."
